Switching supplement manufacturers: a step-by-step guide

Brands switch manufacturers for many reasons: quality problems, missed deadlines, rising costs or a product that's outgrown its partner. A planned move protects your inventory and your customers.

1. Gather what you have

Collect your formula or ingredient specs, finished product specs, label files, packaging specs, testing results and past batch information. The more complete your package, the faster a new manufacturer can quote and start.

2. Protect your inventory

Know how much finished goods and packaging you have and how long it will last. Plan the switch so the new manufacturer's first run lands before you run out.

3. Share details and get a review

A good manufacturer will review your formula and specs and tell you whether it runs as-is or needs changes. Products that failed elsewhere often need formula changes, and that's better found now than after a bad run.

4. Match and approve samples

Ask for samples made to your current specs and compare them side by side with your existing product. Approve taste, texture, appearance and any testing before production.

5. Confirm packaging

Film, labels and cartons may need adjusting for new equipment. Confirm specs early because packaging often has the longest lead time.

6. Run a pilot, then produce

A pilot run on the new line confirms everything works at scale. After approval, schedule production with enough buffer to cover your launch or reorder date.

When a program needs rescuing

Sometimes the move happens under pressure, after a product has already failed. We've taken over a large sachet program in exactly that situation, reworked the formula, rebuilt the visuals and got it shipping.
